Introduction and background

Who we are

The Kidfinity and Beyond Foundation, Inc. is a child-centred, humanitarian and developmental non-stock, non-profit organisation committed to protecting, empowering and transforming the lives of vulnerable children and families. The Foundation primarily focuses on supporting mothers who are Persons Deprived of Liberty and their children.

It was founded on the belief that every child deserves hope, protection, opportunity and a future regardless of circumstance. Children affected by parental incarceration often experience unique and deeply complex vulnerabilities: disruptions in education, emotional distress, financial instability, weakened caregiving systems, social stigma, and reduced access to the opportunities that healthy development requires.

In many cases the incarceration of a parent, particularly a mother, creates a ripple effect that extends far beyond the detention facility. Children are often left in the care of relatives with limited means, forced to adjust to unstable living conditions, or deprived of emotional and financial support during critical developmental years. Without timely intervention, these circumstances may increase the risks of school dropout, neglect, trauma, poverty, social exclusion and intergenerational disadvantage.

Recognising these realities, the Foundation was established as a catalyst for long-term transformation rather than as a source of relief alone.

Why we work with mothers as well as children

The Foundation believes that helping children cannot happen in isolation. While children remain the primary beneficiaries, we likewise acknowledge the importance of supporting mothers and caregivers, particularly incarcerated women, as part of a holistic and sustainable approach to family development.

By empowering mothers through livelihood opportunities, legal support, psychosocial reinforcement and reintegration preparation, the Foundation seeks to strengthen family resilience and improve outcomes for children both during and after incarceration.

Beneficiary selection and prioritisation

At the core of our work is the principle that intervention must be fair, evidence-based, compassionate and responsive to actual need. That commitment led to the development of a standardised Beneficiary Selection and Prioritisation System, which ensures that assistance is distributed transparently and objectively, with priority given to children and families experiencing the highest levels of vulnerability.

In practice this means that assistance is not allocated by proximity, familiarity or the order in which families present themselves. Applications and referrals are assessed against consistent criteria, and the reasoning behind each decision is recorded.

Our academic standard, and why it exists

Children enrolled in the KIDS Programme submit their report cards each grading period, and continued educational assistance is tied to maintaining an average of 85%. We are direct about the reasoning, because conditional assistance deserves an explanation.

The condition is not there to weed children out. It exists because assistance without any feedback loop tells us nothing about whether a child is actually coping, and because the moment a child's marks slip is the moment we most need to know. A scholar who falls below the standard is not dropped. They are placed under academic review, offered tutoring through our partners, and followed up at the next grading period. The point of the number is to trigger attention, not withdrawal.

How the KIDS Programme works

Governance

The Foundation is a non-stock, non-profit corporation governed by a Board of Directors and served by a Secretariat, a social worker and programme staff. Foundation representatives named in our published field reports include Mr. Jeffrey P. Jumarang and Mr. James Bryan Z. Tena of the Board of Directors, Mr. Joel Ranuda as social worker, and Mr. Daryl A. Balderas and Mr. Joselito D. Villamor Jr. among programme staff.

Programmes are delivered in coordination with the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology and the administration of partner facilities, including the Makati City Jail. The Foundation's communications are handled by Ethos.
